I tiptoe to the bed across from mine and gently touch the warm mass I find there. “Brad?”

“Yeah?” His mumble is sleep slurred. The mass under my palm moves as he rolls onto his back to look up at me with hale-shuttered eyes.

“I…forgot something.”

“Can it wait until morning?” I can just see the outlines of his lips moving in the darkness, and leaning down, I kiss him. It’s a short kiss, closed mouth, soft pressure, warmth.

Brad is smiling when I pull away.

“Vinny…I need sleep. But can we practice that more tomorrow?”

Then I wake up.

Ten years ago, I was a scared kid looking to find someone to eat lunch with at a new school. Eight years ago, I was wising the best friend I’ve ever had wasn’t going to leave me behind. Six years ago, I was an idiot in love. Four years ago, I was wondering if he might love me too. Two years ago, I was hoping what we had would last forever. Today, I realized it just might.

“Hey, you ready? We have to go,” Vinny called.

I look up from the ring on my finger and smile. “Yeah, I’m good.”

Title: Counting Down

Summary: For Kathleen, for Christmas.


Lying awake at night, Ilya looks out his window and sees the moon hanging low in the sky, and he wonders…and turns, shifting, to look across his bed, across a continent.

“Do you see it, Dany?”

The moon is fading into clouds tinged with pink, but Dany is still looking up and nods. He lets the early morning light wash over his face, feeling warmed, and imagines that Ilya might be feeling the same way.

“Two more nights left.”

Over the radio, similar yuletide carols are being played.

“Until Christmas,” as Dany smiles.

“Until you,” as Ilya sleeps.
