Title: Crimson and Clover
Rating: G
Characters: Kurogane, Fai
Summary: There is no wrong way to fall in love.
It was very no good and Fai knew it. But he couldn’t help it. His feelings of admiration and fondness for Kurogane had gone and made themselves into something more, and now he was in love and it was just very, very no good. Feelings always were. Especially those that shouldn’t exist.
He realized one night that there were three reasons Kurogane always went to bed after everyone else. The ninja claimed he needed less sleep than they did, which was true. He also claimed that no work would ever get done if he didn’t stay up to do it, which was partly true. The third reason, Fai found out from Mokona.
“Kurogane likes to stay up so he can watch Fai sleep!”
And Fai hoped that this was completely not true, because he loved the ninja more than was good for him, and if his feelings were returned, he would be in deep trouble. Fai didn’t deserve to be loved. Mostly, deep down, Fai admitted that he was a coward, and he was afraid to be loved.
“Do you really watch me sleep, Kuro-myu?” Fai asked one time. “That’s kind of creepy, you know. Are you trying to see how to best kill me while I’m out like a light?”
“It’s the only time you aren’t being fake,” Kurogane snapped back, ending that conversation.
Fai knew Kurogane hated fake people. So technically, Kurogane should hate him. But if Kurogane liked watching him while he wasn’t being fake…
Fai was in deep trouble.
To his credit, he did try everything to get out of it. He laughed, smiled, danced, and basically annoyed the hell out of Kurogane every chance he got. Except Mokona still whispered those eleven words, which meant Kurogane wasn’t stopping, wasn’t giving up, was waiting. Waiting like Fai waited to be rescued. Waiting for Fai to change into the person he could rescue. After all, Kurogane couldn’t be expected to save a person that didn’t exist. Except Fai’s problem was that he was waiting to be rescued so he could begin to exist.
They were both waiting, so Fai decided to end both their suffering.
It was raining and Kurogane was out on the roof, because it was the only place where Mokona wouldn’t follow. Fai had gone after him with an umbrella, ready to make some comment about someone catching a cold, or someone looking like a wet dog. But instead he found himself leaning in to press their lips together in a cold, damp kiss.
Fai was beyond redemption.
“I want to be real for you.”
“Don’t say it unless you mean it,” Kurogane replied roughly, but he kissed back, making sure their lips were warmer this time around.
And Fai really, really did mean it. Maybe he had found his saving grace.
