Title: Time Goes By
Rating: PG
Players: Brad Richards/Vinny Lecavalier
Summary: Everything has changed and nothing has changed, because that's just how they work.

--

It’s been awhile now, but Vinny’s still doing it. He’ll still turn to look for a confirming nod, wait for the punchline to his bad joke, throw out his elbow to get attention for something. The only problem is, there is no nod. There is only silence and empty air.

It’s been awhile now, and Vinny thinks he needs to get used to it. After all, he’s staying in Tampa, and Brad…well, Brad has license to roam, doesn’t he? Sure he’s in Dallas now, but all the hairstyling tips from Modano and donuts from Brett Hull aren’t going to keep him there forever. Brad will move on. Hopefully somewhere close to home, Vinny dares to hope. Hopefully back home, even.

It’s been awhile now, and Vinny doesn’t want to get used to it. Every time he’s been separated from Brad, things get different. Not necessarily a bad different, but different. He finds himself feeling lonely, even though he’s hanging out with his other teammates more than ever, and he feels off balance a lot of the time, except when he’s on the ice – that’s the one place he knows they will share forever. Still, it’s not quite enough. Vinny wants life back the way it’s supposed to be.

It’s been awhile now, and it’s Vinny’s turn to call. So he does, hitting the call button while flopping onto the lawn chair set up on his rooftop.

“Are you dying? Because I’m dying, it’s so hot,” Brad answers without saying hello first. Well, he doesn’t need to, it is Vinny.

“Please. Don’t you remember what summer’s like in Tampa?”

“Give me a week, I’ll be commiserating soon enough. I guess I’ll have to stay at your place?”

Vinny snorts, leaning back to look up at the sky. It’s close to midnight yet there are no stars. There never are, so close to the city. But the moon is out and bright.

“You don’t think I’ve cleaned…hired people to clean your place? You could stay there.”

“But you don’t want me to. And you know I don’t want to. So you wouldn’t have bothered to look up the cleaning crew’s number.” Brad smirks. Vinny can tell, he can practically feel it.

“Fuck you.”

“That’s the plan,” Brad replies cheerfully. There’s a moment of silence, and then Brad says, “It’s still weird, isn’t it.”

“Really weird. Time to go back to Canada.”

Brad laughs, his breath warm over the electrical frequency. “This from the guy who just signed a contract.”

“I needed the money to pay for my cell phone bill! It’s going through the roof, me talking to you.”

“I thought you were saving all of your free minutes for me!” Brad accuses in mock anger, and Vinny starts to laugh.

It’s been awhile now, but Vinny has an idea that maybe, maybe, it will be okay.
